Charles Darwin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover reaffirmed his commitment to Timor Leste when he met recently with the nation’s President in Dili.
In addition to the university’s continued provision of scholarships for study in the areas of science, agriculture and engineering, Professor Glover extended the new offer of a VET-level oil and gas scholarship for a Timorese citizen to study at CDU.
Professor Glover said there were currently 40 Timorese citizens studying at CDU.
“It’s encouraging to see the high regard the President and Prime Minister hold for CDU,” Professor Glover said.
“The warmth of the reception we received from His Excellency speaks to the university’s outstanding reputation and profile in Timor Leste.”
CDU is also involved in the development and delivery of customised training in financial management to civil servants at the Ministry of Finance, and English courses to Timor Leste’s Armed Forces.
The President expressed his gratitude for the university’s continued support, and emphasised the importance of education in securing the country’s future.
During his visit, Professor Glover also met with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, Vice-Minister for Higher Education Marcal Avelino Ximenes, Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources Alfredo Pires, President of the National Petroleum Authority Gauldino Da Silva, Minister for Tourism Francisco K Lay, and senior staff in the Ministry of Finance.
