A Charles Darwin University researcher has been nominated for a national award in recognition of his work in encouraging greater participation by Territory communities in the 2011 Census.
Senior Research Fellow with The Northern Institute Dr Andrew Taylor was nominated for the NatStats 2013 Conference Awards by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The awards recognise excellence in developing statistical capability within the Australian education and training sector.
Dr Taylor said he was pleased that the ABS regarded the research and research communications work by CDU’s Demography and Growth Planning unit as being of great value to the community.
“Helping others to discover, understand and apply the vast stock of information available to us all is a step towards empowering communities to make informed decisions for their futures,” Dr Taylor said.
“There is a lot of international interest in how national data collections like the Census are conducted and applied to research in the Northern Territory.
“This recognises the vital role of both the ABS’s collection and dissemination of official statistics, as well as the innovative methods for applying these statistics in trying to understand the rapidly changing populations of ‘the north’.”
Dr Taylor’s research interests include changing demographics of remote populations, population projections, Indigenous demography and migration futures, remote area tourism, and policy implications for populations of remote places.
He will present his work on the implications for changes to the gender balance of Darwin’s population with the construction of INPEX’s onshore gas facility at a conference in Santa Barbara, USA next week.
