The Chancellor of Charles Darwin University, Her Honour the Honourable Sally Thomas AM, has been re-elected to the position for a second three-year term.
Currently the Administrator of the Northern Territory and a former Judge of the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Chancellor Thomas is the university’s second Chancellor since its inception in 2003.
She has been associated with CDU and its predecessor institutions for almost three decades, during which time she also held the position of Deputy Chancellor.
In welcoming the Chancellor’s re-election, Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover said Her Honour brought to the position not only a wealth of experience and skills in legal practice but also the qualities of a committed reformer and contributor to social justice.
Chancellor Thomas said she was delighted that the Council had shown confidence in her with her election for a second term.
“I am honoured to again be given the opportunity to lead the Council of Charles Darwin University. We have very much to be proud of in the contributions this university makes not only within the Northern Territory but also nationally and in the Asia-Pacific region,” she said.
With a background as a partner and solicitor in a Sydney legal firm, Her Honour was appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate of the Northern Territory in July 1978.
She became Chief Stipendiary Magistrate in April 1986 and was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory on 10 August 1992.
Her Honour became the first woman to be appointed to the position of Administrator of the Northern Territory. She was sworn in on October 31, 2011.
