Nominations are now invited from any member of the University staff for election to the role of Health and Safety Representative for each of the University’s designated Work Groups.
Background:
The establishment of Work Groups and Health and Safety Representatives (HSR) are requirements for an employer under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2007 to ensure that employees are represented and consulted on health and safety matters.
The role of the HSR is to represent the workers of a designated work group on health and safety matters to the employer. It is not the HSR’s role to be responsible for health and safety at the workplace (the primary responsibility for providing and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace rests with supervisors, line managers and senior management).
The HSR still performs the job they are employed to do at the University but in addition, they undertake the representative role on behalf of their work group colleagues.
The HSR performs this role for a period of 2 years, unless they move Work Group in which case a new HSR must be elected.
For further information on the role of the HSR at the University please contact Horst Walter, Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, People Management and Development, on 8946 6592. Alternatively you can access further information from WorkSafe NT at: http://www.worksafe.nt.gov.au/corporate/bulletins/pdf/18/18.01.04.pdf
Nomination Process:
Step 1: To nominate for a position as the HSR for a work group you must first determine the Work Group of which you are a member. The University has previously entered into staff consultation processes and consequently has designated the following areas as Work Groups:
Work Groups by Location |
The location of your workplace (i.e. the building, training centre or campus) determines which Work Group you belong to. Staff who operate from two (or more) workplaces, should use the location of their primary workplace (i.e. their home base) to determine their Work Group. A staff member can only belong to one Work Group. |
