Nominations are now open for the 2011 Northern Territory Young Achiever Charles Darwin University Arts Award.

Each year the NT Young Achiever Awards aim to applaud the efforts and success of young people making meaningful contributions to their community.

The CDU-sponsored Art Award celebrates the creative practices of young people.

Tennant Creek artist Dion Beasley won the Charles Darwin University Arts Award at this year’s NT Young Achiever Awards and was presented with the award by CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover at the awards dinner in April.

Professor Glover said Dion was an inspiration and his passion for art was evident in his work.

Dion suffers from muscular dystrophy and is profoundly hearing impaired. He has evolved his love for drawing from paper to t-shirts, leading him to create the clothing label Cheeky Dog, which has received national recognition. He has also exhibited his work in galleries throughout Australia.

As winner of the Charles Darwin University Arts Award, Dion received a $2000 cheque from TIO and a trophy.

The 2011 Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards will be officially launched in Alice Springs on Thursday August 26, followed by Darwin on Friday August 27. Nomination forms for the 2011 CDU Young Achiever Arts Award are available at www.staffnet.cdu.edu.au.

Nominations close November 26, 2010 and judging will take place in February 2011.
