CDU establishes PhD scholarship for Timor-Leste women

Charles Darwin University is expanding its scholarship program for Timor-Leste residents with a PhD scholarship for women valued at more than $AUD 160,000.

The Timor-Leste Minister for Education, His Excellency Mr Joao Cancio Freitas, said the scholarship was another welcome example of CDU’s strong commitment to capacity development in his country.

The Minister said the scholarship would allow a high-achieving Timor-Leste woman to specialise in an area that was of strategic importance to his country.

Vice-Chancellor of CDU Professor Barney Glover said that CDU had an enduring and successful relationship with Timor-Leste and he expected that the scholarship would not only contribute to developing the Northern Territory’s near neighbour, but would also provide personal and professional development for the woman who was awarded the scholarship.

“CDU considers its relationships with Timor-Leste to be of significant importance and we look forward to welcoming the first holder of the women’s scholarship to the Casuarina campus in 2011,” he said.

The scholarship would include a stipend of $25,000 a year, the waiving of tuition fees and six months of intensive English language training.
