One of the pioneers of higher education in the Northern Territory, Professor David Caro, passed away at the weekend.
Professor Caro had retired from the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne before he was appointed Interim Vice-Chancellor of the Northern Territory University (NTU), the predecessor institution of Charles Darwin University.
He held that position from 1988 to July 1989 when Professor Mal Nairn became the Vice-Chancellor of the NTU.
Professor Caro was a distinguished physicist whose national and international contributions to science and academia were recognised with his appointment as an Officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO).
He held senior positions at three universities before being appointed Chancellor of the University of Ballarat. Professor Caro retired from that position in 2005.
