Population expert to detail Top End demography dynamics

CDU Population expert, Dr Dean Carson will present his research into the NT's demography dynamics to a national conference

The dynamics of the Northern Territory’s population is substantially different from what might be expected elsewhere in Australia, according to a leading population expert.

Principal Research Fellow - Population Studies with The Northern Institute, Associate Professor Dean Carson is set to present his seminar, “The seven Ds of demography in the NT - Census insights to government strategy”, as a part of the national Census conference, “Beyond the Count”.

Dr Carson said that CDU and the Northern Territory Government had entered into a partnership aimed at building capacity to analyse demography data and develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the unique NT population.

“During the course of the partnership, it has become clear that those dynamics are substantially different to any other model in Australia,” he said.

“We have used Census data, among other sources, to demonstrate that the demography in the NT is diverse, distant, delicate, dependent, dynamic, detailed and different.

“This presentation will show how we have used Census data to develop an understanding of the NT population that recognises these seven Ds.”

“Beyond the Count” explores the issues that matter to all Australians. It will look beyond the count and reveal what a difference the Census makes.

Dr Carson will present his seminar on Friday, March 4 as a part of the Census conference which begins tomorrow (March 2) in Melbourne.
