Talented Territory tenor eyes top prize

Talented local opera singer Kang Wang is bound for the national stage after being selected as a finalist of the 2010 Australian Singing Competition.

Aged just 22, the Charles Darwin University IT and Music graduate is already in strong demand throughout the Territory for his unique ability to hit some of the highest notes in the modal register.

Kang will join several other tenors, baritones and sopranos at Australia’s home of opera, the Sydney Opera House, on 12 August for the competition finals.

If recent form is anything to go by then Kang’s prospects seem bright after he won the People's Choice Award in the Joan Sutherland Competition held earlier this month in Brisbane.

Under the guidance of voice lecturer Kathy Banks, from CDU’s Centre for Youth Music, Kang has worked to maximize the control of his voice so he does not simply sing the top notes, but is able to soar with them.

Coming from China to Australia to study at CDU, Kang hopes to be able to remain in the country to pursue his opera career.
