Marlene Kranz presents Shoes on Tuesday 2 September from 12pm to 1pm.

Born in Germany, Marlene Kranz trained as a fashion/set/costume designer in Europe, and worked for Vivienne Westwood before establishing own fashion label, Kranz, in 1995.

She has free-lanced for various state theatres in Germany, and developed the European Union-funded House of Design, based in Bremen, Germany.

Many intense and demanding months of creating new fashion ranges and presenting them within choreographed theatrical events were balanced by several month-long trips to Australia riding her motorbike through the outback, and thus getting hooked forever on the idea of space, which, Marlene explains, “is not a German concept!”

In 1999, she left Europe for Australia and added “shoemaking” to her list of skills.

Marlene established Subtle as the umbrella for her design work: handmade shoes, one-off garments, and screen printed one-off textile runs (sold exclusively at The Dancing Queen, Melbourne).

In 2004, she held her first shoe workshop introducing interested students to the art of making shoes Australia-wide and partly in collaboration with Janet de Boer (The Australian Forum for Textile Arts).

Marlene relocated from Melbourne to Darwin in 2007 and is a lecturer and course coordinator in fashion with CDU’s School of Creative Arts and Humanities.
