A powerful series of etchings by major Kimberley artists will be shown together in Darwin for the first time in an exhibition this month at The Gallery, Charles Darwin University (CDU).
CDU’s Northern Editions, in association with Jirrawun Arts will present the exhibition JIRRAWUN EDITIONS: recent etchings 2005 – 2008, which will feature artists including the late Paddy Bedford, Rammey Ramsey, Freddie Timms, Rusty Peters, and Phyllis Thomas.
The exhibition will be opened by author and journalist Nicolas Rothwell at The Gallery CDU building Orange 10, on Saturday, 16 August at 1pm.
JIRRAWUN EDITIONS, recent etchings 2005 - 2008 is the culmination of a series of printmaking workshops conducted by Leon Stainer and Dian Darmansjah and held at Northern Editions in 2004-2005. It will be the first official launch of these works in Darwin.
This compelling series of etchings depicts significant sites in the artists’ country and their ancestral stories, as well as narratives from the artists’ own lifetimes.
The late Paddy Bedford’s etchings, in particular, are expected to generate intense interest and showcase the artist’s bold brush strokes and striking palette of primary colours against a black background.
A feature of the exhibition will be a preview of five etchings by Rammey Ramsey, produced at Northern Editions in 2005, and proofed in 2008.
Reminiscent of the gestural works of Modernism, these prints are fresh and vibrant statements of the artist’s work and show a clear and confident development in Rammey Ramsey’s approach.
All artwork by the late Paddy Bedford has been made available courtesy of the artist’s estate.
