Charles Darwin University (CDU) will host a public forum in early April on the topic “Climate Change and Indigenous People in Tropical Australia”.
Key speakers will share their experiences of the impact of climate change on Indigenous people and will examine evidence of their adaptation to a changing environment.
The forum is a joint project between CDU, the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance.
The afternoon program will include a panel discussion, drawing together a group of climate change experts to discuss how traditional practices can provide possible solutions to managing climate.
They also will examine factors that obstruct Indigenous people’s participation in the climate change process, and explore opportunities for carbon projects employing traditional knowledge.
Outcomes are intended to feed back into the International Expert Group Meeting on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change which is taking place in Darwin over three days from April 2.
The event, which is free to the public, will be held in the Mal Nairn Auditorium, CDU Casuarina Campus on Thursday 3 April, from 2.30pm to 6pm.
A short social event will be held afterwards and conclude at 7pm.
