Indigenous students excel at work experience

Several Indigenous work experience students have successfully completed a VET in Schools bakery program with Charles Darwin University.

The Kormilda College students have been involved in the bakery program during the year and hope to continue the work placement in 2008.

The program, which has been designed to assist Indigenous students in gaining employment within the baking industry, is unique in Australia.

Bakery coordinator and lecturer, Robert Schwerdt said the experience gave the students a true understanding of the expectations in the work force.

“Last week was the students’ first experience working in a commercial bakery, that of Woolworths,” he said.

“Woolworths have been major supporters of the work experience program and the students really enjoyed it and benefited from the exceptional induction and real work experience.

“Their skills improved during the week and they managed to go that extra step by preparing the bread for the night bakers,” he said.
