Ambassador of Israel, His Excellency Mr Naftali Tamir visited Charles Darwin University (CDU) as a part of his official visit to the Northern Territory and met with Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Garnett on Friday, 6 July 2007.
Professor Garnett provided the Ambassador with an overview of the University in particular CDU’s engagement, support and relationship with the Territory’s Indigenous communities.
The Ambassador and Professor Garnett discussed some of the similarities between Israel’s Bedouin citizens and the Northern Territory’s Indigenous population including some of the major issues that confront the Indigenous groups, in particular education and health.
Professor Garnett also provided an overview of the research and activities undertaken by the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre, as the Ambassador was interested in the similarities between central Australia and Israel’s deserts.
