A moving new photographic exhibition showcasing Australia’s emergency response in the Asia-Pacific will be displayed at two Darwin shopping centres from 31 July-12 August 2007.
Relief in Sight - Australia’s Disaster Response in Pictures is an initiative of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and is a poignant insight into the role of volunteers and relief workers and the reaction of affected communities following disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and the Pakistan earthquake.
The sixty-eight compelling and confronting photographs in the exhibition capture the impact of natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies in Asia as well as offering an insight into the crucial role of Australian aid workers and volunteers in the initial response and longer term rebuilding process.
The Australian Government is a leader in providing humanitarian and emergency services and is often the first to respond when a natural disaster or crisis strikes our region. Over the past five years it has responded to more than 60 emergencies in Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
The photographs have been sourced from aid workers and professional photographers, and include a series photographed during the devastating 2004 tsunami by award-winning Australian photographers, Stephen Dupont and Rob Maccoll.
The free exhibition is touring more than 60 Australian cities and towns over an 18 month period.
