After 11 days of spectacular national and international performances, Darwin will farewell The Seventh Darwin International Guitar Festival on Saturday night, with an outdoor concert at The Strand at Charles Darwin University (CDU).
The concert presented by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra will bring together the Guitar Festival, DSO and CDU and will feature renowned Australian guitar quartet Saffire, Uruguayan guitar virtuoso, Eduardo Fernandez who is performing in Australia for the first time and Antony Field from Melbourne, under the direction of conductor Kevin Cameron.
The Artistic Director of the DSO Martin Jarvis said “The closing concert of the Darwin International Guitar Festival is always a highlight in the DSO’s calendar. This year also sees a new work by Mark Pollard for electric guitar, with an exciting fireworks display to close the event.”
Festival director, Adrian Walter said it would be sad to say farewell.
“The concert will be a wonderful way to end what has been one of the best Guitar Festivals yet”, Mr. Walter said.
“The performers at this year’s festival have really taken things to a new level, and I’m sure the closing concert will be no different” he said.
The concert will feature a number of works for guitar and orchestra, including the much-loved Aranjuez Concerto by Rodrigo and his Concerto Andaluz for Four Guitars. Orchestral works will include Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Espana by Chabrier . Developed as a partnership between CDU and the DSO, the concert will be a highlight of the Festival.
Concert conductor, Kevin Cameron said he was looking forward to the concert and the beautiful setting on campus at CDU.
“I still remember my last concert with the DSO, back in 1998,” he said. “It was a great concert, made all the more enjoyable by the wonderful people from the orchestra. I am very much looking forward to this visit.”
Concert-goers are encouraged to enjoy the impressive lawns of CDU’s The Strand by bringing along a picnic blanket or chair but are reminded that there is no BYO as there will be a public bar, the profits of which will go to supporting the DSO.
Tickets are $30 adults $25 for concession and $15 for children and available from the CYM Shop, Building 16, CDU (89466860) or at the Gate. ‘The Strand’ is located adjacent to the Library, Building 38.
