Darwin experiences many electric nights during the wet season, but this dry season we will be in for a unique dry season electric night as part of the Seventh Darwin International Guitar Festival.
Electric Nights features visiting Canadian composer and guitarist Tim Brady, in a concert anticipated to engage audiences in a cutting edge presentation of electric guitar, staged outdoors at the Charles Darwin University Soundshell.
The program will include a number of eclectic pieces featuring pre-recorded everyday noises (such as voices and traffic), random sound created by musical toys, bells, small instruments and whistles, all supported by a cycle of music for electronics, guitar and tape.
Tim has created music in a wide range of genres ranging from chamber and orchestral music to electro acoustic works, chamber opera, contemporary dance scores, jazz and free improvisation.
He has enthralled audiences from London to New York, and from Amsterdam to Paris with his own music, as well as works which he has commissioned for other composers, with the vision of developing a new voice for the electric guitar.
‘This is a rare chance to enjoy an innovative electric guitar player of such a high calibre who has such varied styles and methodology incorporated into his performances,’ said CDU contemporary music lecturer and local Darwin musician, Cal Williams.
Tim has played at a number of international music festival including The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), the Bang on a Can Festival (NY), and De Ijsbreker (Amsterdam), Radio-France (Paris), the Barcelona Contemporary Music Festival and BKA (Berlin), but this is his first time featuring as part of the Darwin International Guitar Festival and a unique addition to the line up this year.
Electric Nights will be held on Thursday 5 July, from 8pm at the CDU Soundshell, Casuarina Campus. Tickets are for sale from Charles Darwin University - CYM Shop, Building 16 or by phoning 08 8946 6860. The cost is $25 for adults, $18 concession and $10 child.
