High Court Judge visits CDU

The Hon. Justice Michael Kirby visited CDU during June

Charles Darwin University (CDU) was honoured in June with a visit by Justice Michael Kirby of the High Court of Australia.

Justice Kirby presented an address to students at CDU’s Casuarina Campus, which was also streamed live via CDU’s online classroom to students who study at CDU externally as far away as Sydney and Kuwait.

Associate Professor of Law at CDU, Matthew Storey said CDU is uniquely equipped to enable students to benefit from this type of presentation.

‘CDU is the only university in Australia offering a law degree completely online,’ he said. ‘Because of this, we are well equipped to enable all students, not just those on campus, to benefit from a presentation like this one.’

Justice Kirby spoke to students about his daily roles and responsibilities as a Justice of the High Court of Australia and gave the students an insight into what is involved with writing and delivering judgements in the High Court.

Following his address, Justice Kirby participated in an online classroom discussion after which he commended CDU on its delivery of law studies in the Northern Territory, particularly in our ability to offer law studies to regional and remote students.

Justice Kirby was also on campus to launch the Northern Territory Law Journal, which is being produced by the NT Council of Law Reporting, in association with CDU’s School of Law and Business.

‘Both his Honour’s visit and the launching of the Law Journal at CDU are indications of the growing recognition and reputation of CDU law,’ said Associate Professor Storey.
