Harmony Day brings on a colourful display

Students in traditional costume turned out in big numbers to celebrate International Harmony Day at Charles Darwin University on Wednesday (March 21).

They sang, danced, clapped and gave the audience a taste of their cultures drawn from most of the continents.

A highlight was a resounding version of Bruce Woodley’s Aussie anthem We Are Australian, in which the origins of students from Sudan, Somalia, Congo, Burundi and Liberia were squeezed into the lyrics.

Separate groups of students then demonstrated the dances of their culture on stage at the campus theatre in Building 17.

Earlier, students had given brief speeches of welcome in their first language.
