Asriana Kebon’s journey to Charles Darwin University was one of professional necessity and one which has opened numerous doors for her career.
Working in Bali as a freelance translator/interpreter following the first Bali bombing, Asriana decided to go back to university complete her degree.
‘My previous role as a freelancer gave me valuable work experience but when the time came to apply for a “real-job” I was always asked what qualifications I had, this inspired me to go back to uni and finally complete what I had started two years earlier,’ she explained.
Studying Indonesian and Asian studies at CDU, Asriana was able to see a different side of Indonesian culture and language teaching techniques.
‘The study tour to Mataram University in Lombok organised by Richard Curtis was fantastic and enabled me to think outside the square so to speak.’
Asriana, who now works for the Australian Consulate General in Bali as the office manager for the Australian Federal Police Bali Post, had fond memories of her time at CDU and these words of advice.
‘Studying at CDU was great; the atmosphere and close interaction with the lecturers was a distinct advantage,’ she said.
‘To any prospective student I would recommend sticking to your study plan because a qualification no matter if it is a degree or a diploma does help open doors to employment.’
