CDU kicks off year with orientation

Orientation 2007 at Charles Darwin University (CDU) will be a jam-packed week of social, cultural and sporting events familiarising new students with CDU’s diverse range of services.

Specific programs designed to meet the needs of new students are organised for the main day on 21 February and earlier in the week international and Indigenous students will be able to families themselves with CDU and Casuarina Campus with sessions to meet their specific needs and answer any questions.

‘The lunchtime BBQ and concert on 21 February will feature popular Territory funk/rock band Neo and will be held in the new Student Square,’ says Jennifer Ramsay, CDU’s marketing events officer.

Jennifer is confident students will have plenty of opportunities to meet other students and have fun.

‘For the first time, each of CDU’s three faculties will invite their students to a dean’s welcome address and light refreshments. This will provide a unique opportunity for students to meet staff and other students from their own study area.

Orientation will end with a movie night in the Mal Nairn Auditorium at the Casuarina Campus,’ she says.

Orientation also provides the opportunity to find out about support services available at CDU to new and continuing students. Elizabeth Macdonald, director of support and equity services, explained that the transition to university life can be challenging.

‘Whether you are a first time student, one returning to study or a re-enrolling student, orientation is a must. CDU recognises the importance of ensuring that all students are familiar with their campuses, course requirements and the services available,’ says Elizabeth.

‘Students are prone to more stress and concerns about their future,’ she says. ‘During orientation week we get a chance to show all students that Support and Equity Services can support them.’

Orientation 2007 at CDU will ensure students are well equipped to commence studies. Put simply, if you miss out on orientation you will be missing out on essential information and lots of fun!

Orientation 2007 takes place on Wednesday 21 February at Casuarina, Palmerston and Alice Springs campuses. International and Indigenous student orientation programs have also been organised. For more information visit www.cdu.edu.au/orientation.
