Territory parents have a great new tool to help their four to six year old children negotiate their way through preschool and into primary school, thanks to an innovative program starting up across Territory schools.
Charles Darwin University’s School for Social Policy and Research recently launched the Let’s Start program and website to support young Territory children to get off to the best possible start.
Let’s Start is a fun and practical program supported with activities aimed at developing young children’s social skills and providing support to parents. The program gives parents the chance to talk to other parents, to discuss how they deal with children’s behaviour and other issues of concern to them and their families.
Let’s Start has been especially developed to assist Indigenous children; however the program is available to all children throughout participating schools.
The program will run in weekly sessions where child and parent work together in small groups, with activities led by trained group leaders. Sessions are conducted each school term.
Let’s Start is being delivered through a partnership between CDU, the Northern Territory Government, the Catholic Education Office and participating schools.
To get involved log onto the Let’s Start website or for more information on Let’s Start, contact Bonnie Moss on 8946 7001 or email bonita.moss@cdu.edu.au.
Let’s Start is an Early Childhood – Invest to grow initiative, funded by the Australian Government under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy. Additional funding has been received from the NT Government and the Australian Research Council.
