You could not find two more opposite careers, but for former soldier Kevin Heslop, an accounting degree at Charles Darwin University (CDU) gave him the opportunity to try something completely different.
‘After serving eight years in the Army, I wanted a career that could provide me with unlimited opportunities,’ Kevin said. ‘CDU gave me the opportunity and flexibility to study and stay in Darwin.'
Now an accountant with BDO Chartered Accountants and Advisers, Kevin says that the best aspect of studying his course was the staff to student ratio:
‘By the second year, you know all the staff by name, and most of them know yours. The one-on-one advice that you get from your lecturer is unique—and I don’t think any student interstate would have this opportunity.
‘The course was challenging and motivating. It reassured me that I must work hard for my degree and it won’t be handed to me on a plate.
’Studying in Darwin is also a completely different experience. It’s relaxed—you can get away with wearing shorts for the whole year. Not to mention that Darwin has plenty of casual work to help you financially while studying.’
And in offering advice for prospective accounting students, Kevin says, ‘study buddies are worth their weight in gold. You’re not supposed to get the right answer all of the time, you are expected to have a good attempt trying.’
