This year’s 2006 Melbourne Cup lunch at Palmerston Campus’ Karawa restaurant, has attracted record numbers for the race that once again stopped the nation.
With the added pressure of 160 expectant guests, students involved in a variety of areas from both Casuarina and Palmerston campuses developed the sellout luncheon from start to finish.
Coordinator and lecturer in tourism and hospitality, Sandy Smith, said it was great to see students from different areas of study combining their efforts in order to make this the most successful Melbourne Cup lunch ever held at Karawa.
‘Our diploma students in hospitality coordinated our VET in Schools students with great professionalism and our event management students ensured the day ran without fault.
‘Even the hairdressing students volunteered their services to the fashion students and their models to make their fashion parade all the more spectacular,’ she said.
Coordinator and lecturer in commercial and Asian cookery, Ty Lee, said the idea of a sellout had a few lecturers and students rather anxious.
‘To cater and wait on over 160 guests is a big job for any restaurant let alone a training restaurant, but the day could not have been a bigger success.
‘Students applied their theory and practical based learnings to great effect and the hands on environment brought out the best in them,’ said Ty.
Major events on the day included fashion parades and competitions on and off the catwalk, the sumptuous buffet, and the ever popular sweeps and raffles.
