Rural scholars recognised and rewarded

Katherine Campus students, Anna Elliott, Erin, Louise and Michelle Hansen have received scholarships to assist with their studies

Four students at Charles Darwin University’s Katherine Campus were recognised for their academic achievements at a scholarships ceremony on 27 October.

Anna Elliott, Erin, Louise and Michelle Hansen are all enrolled in the Certificate III in Agriculture (Beef Production) at the Katherine Campus.

Anna Elliott was awarded the BiZnorth Location Scholarship by Annette Gillanders, managing director of BiZnorth Pty Ltd. Anna has been at the campus all year, completing both the certificate II and III in agriculture. The scholarship has been established through CDU Foundation to assist and encourage regional students studying at CDU.

BiZnorth also awarded an encouragement scholarship to Erin Hansen in recognition of her strong potential in the pastoral industry and her excellent application for the location scholarship. BiZnorth has pledged to arrange mentors from the NT pastoral industry for Anna and Erin in association with John Carroll, chief executive officer of the Department of Primary Industry, Fisheries and Mines.

Erin also received a scholarship from the North Australian Pastoral Company as did her sisters, Louise and Michelle. The triplets have been studying the certificate III in agriculture since May 2006.

NAPCo originally offered two agricultural scholarships to students in the certificate III program. However, based on their exemplary performance at NAPCo properties on the Barkly during their month long work experience in September, Ross Peatling recommended that an additional scholarship be granted. Mr Peatling is the manager of Alexandria Station, one of the Territory’s largest pastoral holdings and a key NAPCo property. Delphine Bentley, general manager of corporate development for NAPCo, was pleased to provide the third scholarship.

VET program leader for the School of Science and Primary Industries, Dr Brian Heim, said, ‘We are very proud of these students and indeed the entire certificate III in agriculture group.

’This has been an outstanding cohort of students and it would have been very difficult for the scholarship sponsors to determine the most deserving ones.

‘We appreciate the support from BiZnorth and NAPCo and the recognition from industry is a tremendous accomplishment for our students,’ he said.
