Charles Darwin University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Garnett will discuss the future of tertiary education in the Top End in the final lecture of the Local Experts: Global issues lecture series tomorrow night (Tuesday 24 Oct).
The well-attended October lecture series has been a success as CDU academics in the fields of health, education and social policy have explored contemporary issues and engaged in lively debate with the audience.
Professor Garnett has spent the past three years as Vice-Chancellor, overseeing a period of intense reform sparked by the decision to virtually create a new, re-branded University by restructuring the former Northern Territory University, and bringing it together with three other institutions.
In renaming the University, the emphasis has been on forging new partnerships with government and private enterprise, boosting the commitment to Indigenous education and intensifying the University’s research program.
CDU is also looking to increase its ties with southern and eastern Asia by developing regional partnerships.
“For a University like ours to survive in 21st century we need to have global standing in some key areas of research and education,” says Professor Garnett.
Professor Garnett had a career in microbiology in South Africa and Wollongong before leading the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation for ten years.
Her lecture will be held in the lecture theatre at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory at 6pm. Refreshments will be provided after the lecture. Entry is free.
