Jabiru staff have been busy avoiding crocodiles over the last few weeks as they travel around the region on teaching rounds.
A trip to Oenpelli, an aboriginal community 55 kilometres from Jabiru requires remote lecturer, Sue Smiley, to drive over Cahill’s Crossing, which is tidal and full of crocodiles—it's common to see six or more crocodiles when crossing the river.
Sue’s students are enrolled in VETiS programs covering the Certificate I in Tourism and Certificate I in Retail Operations at the local Gunbalanya School. The students are all very keen and work hard at completing their studies.
Donna Iddon, another lecturer at Jabiru with similar experiences of crocodiles, recalls a recent lecturing day when her students were called to assist a car swept from Cahill’s Crossing.
Donna noticed a number of crocodiles circling the vehicle and says the passengers were relieved to be pulled out of the water.
Finally, lecturer in Certificate II in Visual Arts, Sue Luxon has identified some up-and-coming artists among her Jabiru students. Sue teaches ceramics and drawing as part of the certificate.
