Charles Darwin University (CDU) VET student Amina Sherif has won the 2006 School Based Apprentice of the Year Award.

Winning the award recognises Amina’s talent, persistence and dedication to her chosen field of fashion.

Amina’s interest in the industry blossomed after modelling at Fred’s Pass Rural Show.

”When I started modelling I thought of having a career designing my own garments,” she said.

She is now completing a Certificate II in Clothing Production (Complex) at CDU, finishing her studies at Sanderson High School, Darwin and undertaking her apprenticeship at The Sewing Room.

The first year of her apprenticeship was spent learning about alterations and repairs. She joined the CDU VET in Schools Program this year.

Orna Bennett, her employer at The Sewing Room says Amina has gained technical, vocational and interpersonal skills during her apprenticeship. Orna says exposure to the workplace was invaluable for Amina.

Her fellow students also benefit with Amina motivating others to continue their passion for fashion and gain apprenticeships once completing their formal schooling.

She says the school based apprenticeship improved her confidence and self esteem. ”Because of it, I will stay at school and now complete year 12,” she said.

Amina hopes to complete her apprenticeship in 2007.
