Remote fashion studies a hit!

Charles Darwin University's (CDU) School of Creative Arts and Humanities recently delivered its first remote fashion program to a group of ten women at Merripen Arts Centre at Daly River.

The students undertook training in the Certificate I in Clothing Production and some will come to Darwin under Away from Base funding to complete their certificate.

Julia Van Der Sommen, lecturer in fashion studies, said the students and staff were very enthusiastic about their studies and all expressed an interest in continuing their training at CDU.

Some of the women made a bag that could be replicated to sell in their art shop and were immediately looking for more skills to expand their product range of printed fabrics into aprons, bags and cushion covers. With this training they also anticipate making skirts and tops for their community.

Word of the student enjoyment of the course travelled quickly and by the end of the week a number of other women had put their name down for a future course.

The success of the week has paved the way for future fashion studies courses to be held at other communities around the Northern Territory.
