Jabiru Centre activities

Hosting a careers expo for local students and providing units as part of the Junior Ranger Program, Jabiru Centre is big on community involvement.

The Junior Ranger Program is now running with students enrolled in units in the Certificate I in Business and Certificate I in Introductory Vocational Education – these units assist the students with entry into the Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management, completion of which enables them to work in any national park within Australia.

One of the students has already been offered an apprenticeship with Parks Australia North which is encouraging for the other students. It is anticipated that as the course progresses the other students will also be offered apprenticeships and positions with Parks Australia North.

The Jabiru Training Centre hosted Careers Expo 2006 on Friday 4 August with around 55 students from the local Jabiru area school attending. The Careers Expo continued on to Oenpelli, Maningrida and Nhulunbuy.

Course information

Road access has now opened and Jabiru Centre lecturers are driving over the river into Arnhemland to deliver courses in Certificate I in Retail Operations, Certificate I in Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture), Certificate I in Access to Employment and Further Study, and Certificate II in Business at Oenpelli. Courses are delivered to the high school students and local council employees.

The lecturers love travelling to Oenpelli as the drive takes you through some of the most magnificent escarpment.

Staff movements

Geoff White is on leave for semester two with Elizabeth Williams taking on the position as acting centre manager.
