Dr Iain Field commenced on 5 June as a research fellow with the School for Environmental Research in a joint position with the Australian Institute of Marine Science.
Iain is working on a three year shark tagging and population modelling project with a focus on two commercially important shark species (black tip and spot-tailed sharks) in the northern fishery (for more details go to visit the SER website).
The main aims of the project are to estimate fishing-related mortality and design sustainable management protocols for shark fisheries in Northern Australia.
Iain recently returned from Antarctica where he was undertaking research on the influence of sea-ice on the movement and foraging behaviour of Weddell seals to identify the effects of changing environments on marine vertebrates. This work was with Mark Hindell at the Antarctic Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Tasmania.
