In keeping with Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) proactive approach to asbestos management, Finance and Asset Services (FAS) will be updating our existing Asbestos Register.
The University has contracted Wingard & Associates NT to undertake this task and this necessitates the sampling of some building components. The samples will then be laboratory tested off site.
Commencing 10 July 2006 and lasting for approximately two weeks, staff from Wingard & Associates NT will need to access all areas of buildings C1 to C25 and C44 and carry out this sampling. During this time they will be escorted by a FAS staff member and/or security staff where necessary.
A schedule detailing buildings, points of contact and preferred times for building inspections will be sent before COB 30 June 2006. If, for any reason the proposed schedule is unacceptable to your area of responsibility, please contact Eric Pokela on ext 6606 and arrange alternate time.
Every endeavour will be made to minimise disruption to staff throughout this process. However, some minor inconvenience may be unavoidable. The sampling process consists of:
- Occupant will be asked to vacate the room whilst sample is taken
- In an unobtrusive location a small sample of material is taken
- Immediately the sample area is sealed with PVA glue to prevent dust dispersal
- Sample area marked with small sticker for reference
- Time taken two to three minutes per sample
During the sampling process personal protective equipment will be used by the inspectors.
Samples are tested off site and if identified as containing asbestos, appropriate asbestos warning signs will then be affixed.
FAS wish to thank you for your understanding and cooperation in assisting us with this necessary undertaking. Please contact us on ext 6500 if you have any concerns.
