This Saturday, 24 June, the Centre for Youth Music at Charles Darwin University (CDU) will present a special concert showcasing the talents of young musicians from Darwin and Melbourne.
Entitled North and South String Together, the concert will feature the Darwin Youth Orchestra, one of the most senior ensembles in the CYM, who will join forces with the Melbourne String Ensemble who are touring the Top End. Both ensembles feature talented young musicians ranging in age from 12 to 18 years.
The young performers will present a program featuring Bach’s Double Violin Concerto with soloists Liisa Woodrow-Smith from the Melbourne String Ensemble and Kae-bin Su from the Darwin Youth Orchestra. Both ensembles will perform their own repertoire as well as join together for several works, including Symphony No. 8 by Dvorak.
The Melbourne String Ensemble, conducted by Fintan Murphy, performs in an annual subscription series in Melbourne and has toured Singapore, Malaysia and parts of Europe.
The Darwin Youth Orchestra, conducted by Annette Anderson, consists of around 40 of Darwin’s most talented orchestral players. The orchestra gives regular concerts and has toured the Territory on a number of occasions.
This week the DYO have had the opportunity to rehearse with the MSE, attend a concert of theirs and perform a master class given by their director.
Says Darwin Youth Orchestra conductor, Annette Anderson, “I am very glad that the Melbourne String Ensemble have made the long trek to the Northern Territory. It has been most enjoyable making music together and I’m sure all the young musicians have enjoyed the fruits of this week’s collaboration”.
The Centre for Youth Music conducts a comprehensive tuition and ensemble program for children from three to18 years and is based at Charles Darwin University. The Darwin Youth Orchestra is one of the most senior ensembles and welcomes new members.
The concert will be held in the Charles Darwin University Theatre at 7.30pm. Tickets are $10, $5 concession and $20 for families and available at the door. For further information, please ring 8946 6013.
