Carole Kayrooz presents The role of autonomy in social science research: The view from UK and Australian universities, on Friday 23 June from 1pm to 2pm.

Professor Kayrooz’s seminar will draw on an edited collection entitled The role of autonomy in social science research: The view from UK and Australian universities (eds. Kayrooz, Akerlind and Tight, Elsevier, forthcoming).

There have been many pressures on both institutional and individual autonomy in the university sector: the democratisation of higher education post World War II; the economic downturn of the 1970’s; and the trend towards globalisation. The subsequent decline of public funding for universities has led to intense institutional competition, increased engagement with industry partners and the commercialisation of university research. Similarly, governmental calls for accountability have placed new perfomative stresses on research.

How has research autonomy been affected and, if so, why does this matter? The jury is not even out on this topic because the questions have yet to be asked clearly and insistently, particularly in relation to the social sciences.

In bringing together the work of researchers across the UK and Australia, Professor Kayrooz’s presentation explores the history, meanings, nature, and current experience of autonomy in social science research in the university sector.

This seminar takes place in main seminar room, Building 22 (22.01), Casuarina Campus.
