Charles Darwin University’s Henley on Todd crew is champing at the bit in the countdown to the 50th running of the regatta in the dry Todd River bed this Saturday.

Team spokesperson Debbie Boon said: “We’ll be having a practice run at a secret location during the week to make sure the crew members are at their optimum performance levels.

“We’re called the Motley Crew,” she said.

Construction Lecturer Jeff Nobbs built the bottomless boat last week, using the latest high tech materials and state-of-the-art equipment.

“It’s a lean, mean racing machine with an unknown top speed,” he said.

Mrs Boon said the craft looked even better now that it had undergone a splash of paint.

“It has a gleaming white hull so you won’t be able to miss us,” she said.

“Team spirit is high and I think we’re in for a lot of fun.”
