Students from the Centre for Youth Music will be starting the year with a music camp at Lake Bennett.

A second residential music camp has been organised for the Darwin Youth Orchestra (DYO) from 9-11 February.

The camp will provide a unique environment for young musicians to focus and develop their instrumental skills in an encouraging and enjoyable atmosphere.

The DYO is one of the most senior groups in the Centre for Youth Music. Its membership comprises of young orchestral musicians ranging in age from nine to 16. Many new members are joining the orchestra this year and it also welcomes new conductor, Merillee Mills and assistant conductor Skye Mead.

The camp will host a number of key tutors, including guest conductor, Brett Kelly.

Brett is a trombonist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and an experienced conductor.

Cindy Watkins, also with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, will tutor the second violins and violas.

Other camp tutors include professional musicians from the Darwin community all with extensive experience in both performing and tutoring, including Julia Toussaint-Jackson, Penny Reiss, Rebecca Harris, Skye Mead and Alice Springs’ Jane Coleman.

The camp will conclude with a concert showcasing the weekend’s work for parents, friends and family, held at the CDU Theatre on Sunday 11 February from 4.30pm. Admission is free.
