The Territory’s leading vocational education and training (VET) provider, Charles Darwin University will offer more innovative educational courses than ever for secondary students in 2011.
VET in Schools (VETiS) programs have commenced at CDU campuses across the Territory providing a chance for secondary school students to develop employability skills and gain nationally recognised qualifications while completing their secondary education.
CDU secondary schools liaison Trisha Mellows said that VETiS support students to become 'work ready', through providing professional pathways while they continue to attend secondary school.
“They also receive a qualification at the end of their training which is often their first step towards gaining employment when they finish school and recognition for future vocational qualifications,” she said.
“The certificates on offer for the first semester through CDU VETiS include a large range of certificates from Beauty and Hairdressing, to Business and Automotive.”
Ms Mellows said that there were several new certificates on offer in 2011 including, the Certificate III in Creative Industries Media.
“This new qualification reflects the role of a skilled operator in the film, television, radio or digital media industries and applies a broad range of competencies in a varied work context,” she said.
Last year CDU school-based apprentice Yazmin Brown was named the Stella Axarlis Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year at the Australian Training Awards.
Yazmin had been studying a Certificate III in Automotive Technology (Light Vehicle) through CDU while attending Casuarina Senior College and working at Kerry’s Automotive Group.
CDU won six awards, including Apprentice of the Year, at the annual Northern Territory Training Awards that recognise individuals, businesses and organisations achieving excellence in the field of vocational education and training (VET).
CDU students took out VET in Schools Student of the Year, School Based Apprentice of the Year, Aboriginal and Torres Islander Student of the Year, and Trainee of the Year.
