A Charles Darwin University staff member has been recognised for her tireless efforts as a volunteer at multiple Arafura Games.

Research Services Coordinator with CDU’s Office of Library Services, Jayshree Mamtora was presented with an honorary Arafura Games Medal in recognition of her contribution to an astonishing five Arafura Games campaigns.

Ms Mamtora was one of a number of volunteers presented with a medal by Territory Minister for Sports Karl Hampton at a recent ceremony held at Parliament House.

Ms Mamtora said the Games, which are held every two years and draw thousands of athletes from across the Oceanic region, was a highlight of her social calendar.

“Working for the Games presents a fantastic opportunity to meet and provide support for athletes both from overseas as well as Australia,” she said.

“Each time I have taken on the role of a team attaché, which involves working long hours to help and support athletes and officials from a particular country.

“It can be exhausting but at the same time it is very fulfilling, and it’s so wonderful to be there to celebrate their wins and medals.”

And while the 2013 Arafura Games may still be too far in the future for most, Ms Mamtora is already looking forward to her sixth campaign.

“I’ll keep on doing it for as long as I am physically able,” she said.
