Salon upgrades puts CDU apprentices a cut above the rest

CDU Alice Springs-based hairdressing lecturer Maggie Prow shows off the refurbished salon

Guests of the Alice Springs CDU Hairdressing Salon can now relax in a refurbished facility.

New flooring, basins, and benches are a refreshing addition to the salon, with VET hairdressing lecturer Maggie Prow excited with the changes.

“1970s’ hair styles don't have to be cut in a ’70s-style salon any more," she said.

Maggie said the upgrades had resulted in students taking greater pride in their work.

“They are much happier to work in these facilities and seem to take more of an interest in looking after their clients and tidying up after themselves,” she said.

The salon is popular with students, CDU staff and clients from across Alice Springs who are keen to have their hair cut, permed, coloured or straightened by budding hairdressers.

Apprentices work under Maggie’s watchful eye and the students’ confidence was greatly boosted when the client saw the end result, she said.

“They often get a small tip, but it’s the compliments that make them happy.”

With close industry links, Maggie will host an industry event in September, allowing her 10 apprentices and 17 VET in schools students to flaunt their talents to an audience of parents and local salon operators.

“It’s not about competition, but recognising the talents of my students in this fast-moving and dynamic industry,” she said.

Her enthusiasm is backed up by students and other lecturers.

Year 12 VET in schools student Tara Smith said the salon was a much happier place to work at.

“It’s much brighter in here and all the students have said how it’s more enjoyable to study here,” she said.

Industry-based hairdressing student Carissa Read backed up Tara’s comments.

“It’s really important to teach students in an environment that reflects modern salons and the university has done a great job to make it smart, modern and professional,” she said.
