Last month’s Charles Darwin University (CDU) Graduate Recruitment Fair was an opportunity for CDU students to secure real jobs before they finish their courses.

The Darwin Convention Centre (DCC) began its recruitment drive at CDU’s recruitment expo, offering on-the-job training and career opportunities to locals.

The DCC is recruiting for at least 150 positions including chefs, stewards, catering attendants, café staff, cleaners, stage and set crews, and audio-visual staff.

CDU hospitality students now can look forward to secure employment in their chosen career, gaining valuable work experience and training even before they finish their courses.

Darwin Convention Centre’s food and beverage manager Aaron Roussos, a nationally renowned chef and former venue catering manager at Adelaide Showgrounds, is heading up the campaign to recruit local people.

Mr Roussos said interest in working at Australia’s newest convention centre was high and it provided a great opportunity to work for internationally renowned employer – AEG Ogden, which operates the Darwin Convention Centre.

“The Darwin Convention Centre is a significant new employer in the Territory, and the people who work there will be local Territorians who are proud to show off their skills and their city,” Mr Roussos said.

“We will employ people who want to deliver a truly unique Darwin experience to our international, national and local guests.”

Mr Roussos is working closely with CDU’s Hospitality Team at the Palmerston campus as well as local schools, including Darwin High School and Taminmin High School, to give young students a chance at a career in hospitality.

New staff members will receive training accredited to national standards.

The Darwin Convention Centre will be open in June, with 12 conferences planned within the first six months. For more information on job opportunities, call the Darwin Convention Centre on 8923 9000.
