The first in this year’s Charles Darwin Symposia series will focus on the future of water in the Top End.
The topic of the May Symposium is “Water in the Top End: Opportunities and Constraints” and aims to address wide-ranging issues surrounding the future uses of water resources, including agriculture, climate change and water, social and cultural dimensions of water, and results of the Northern Australia Water Use Summit.
Water is now recognised as a scarce resource, with a potentially powerful economic, environmental and cultural impact on the future of all Australians.
This symposium will facilitate discussion and debate about water use in the Top End and is free to members of the public.
Charles Darwin University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and convenor of the symposium, Professor Bob Wasson said the use of water in the Top End was currently a hot topic, with competing interests and pressures from drought-ravaged southern Australia.
“This symposium provides Northern Territorians an opportunity to debate how they might respond to this demand, now and in the future,” he said.
Speakers will present a range of information about the opportunities for and constraints on water use in the Territory.
Master of ceremonies, and environmental and communications consultant Rob Gell will lead discussions at the event.
Charles Darwin Symposia are an initiative of the Charles Darwin University/Northern Territory Government Partnership Agreement and are supported by the NT Government and the Australian National University.
The symposia are designed to encourage lively and informed debate on issues of importance to all Territorians.
Opportunities are provided for the public to comment, question and critique the experts, as well as to present their own perspectives on the issues.
The event will be held on Friday May 30 at the Mal Nairn Auditorium, Charles Darwin University, Casuarina campus, Darwin.
