Fresh and renewed energy was palpable at Charles Darwin University (CDU) last week as students arrived from around Australia and the globe to participate in the University’s Orientation Week.

Students streamed on to CDU’s Casuarina campus for a week jammed-packed with social, cultural and sporting events aimed at helping domestic and international students to settle quickly into university life.

More than 350 students filled the Mal Nairn auditorium for the welcome by Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Garnett, and an overview of CDU’s Student Services by its Director, Ms Debra Farrelly.

After faculty conducted tours of lecture rooms and campus facilities, students gathered in Student Square for a free lunchtime BBQ and to view the record number of exhibitors on display at the basketball courts.

Information and recruitment booths absorbed students, distributing pamphlets and other promotional material for clubs and organisations, businesses, social and educational groups.

An hour-long concert by rock band Neo entertained students into the afternoon concluding a busy first day for commencing students.

More than 40 students also were welcomed at CDU’s Alice Springs campus with the LearnLink presentation held in the new higher education building proving a hit.

With crowds bigger than previous years, Orientation 2008 demonstrates CDU’s commitment to helping new students become familiar with their campus, the services available, and starting their university experience with a smile.
