Fostering sustainable behaviour

Leading Canadian author and environmental psychologist, Dr Doug McKenzie-Mohr will address issues surrounding environmental behavioural change when he visits Charles Darwin University in early February.

Dr McKenzie-Mohr, who has provided training internationally for more than 40,000 people, will come to CDU for two one-day workshops aimed at fostering and promoting sustainable behaviour.

Hosted by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), the workshops will illustrate how community-based social marketing techniques can encourage people to make permanent changes in the way they act.

EPA Chair, Dr Andrew Tupper said the EPA was very pleased to host workshops in the Northern Territory which would in turn increase their knowledge about strategies and tactics used internationally to change the way people treat the environment.

“Dr McKenzie-Mohr is the founder of an effective approach for promoting sustainable behaviour used by government and industry worldwide and wrote the book on fostering sustainable behaviour,” he said.

“This is a rare opportunity for anyone involved in funding, planning, or delivering sustainable programs or projects to develop important practical skills.

“One-quarter of the workshop places will be sponsored by the EPA for students, researchers and other interested individuals who can demonstrate how they would benefit from this training and would not otherwise be able to attend.”

The first one-day workshop on 5 February 2009 is a comprehensive introduction to how community-based social marketing is being applied throughout the world to foster sustainable behaviour.

The advanced workshop on the following day will include in-depth exposure to actual programs.  Participation will be limited to 75 participants who have either read Fostering Sustainable Behaviour or attended the introductory workshop.

“Numbers are limited to provide ample opportunity for discussion of actual programs and case studies, so we encourage people who would like to attend to register before the holidays,” Dr Tupper said.
