Campuses get ready for cyclone season

Preparations are well under way across the University as the 2008 - 2009 cyclone season dawns.

Managers, supervisors and people new to the Top End are invited to a cyclone briefing by the Bureau of Meteorology and NT Emergency Services at the Casuarina campus on Tuesday 18 November from 11am to 12noon.

The briefing, to be held in the Mal Nairn Auditorium (Red 7), will provide general information about cyclones and the threats they pose. It also will provide advice on how best to prepare for cyclones.

Finance and Asset Services and Horst Walter, from People Management and Development, will attend to address any CDU-specific questions which managers and staff may have.

CDU has a communications plan in place to ensure that students and staff are fully informed about preparing for cyclones, what to do in the event of an impending cyclone and the procedures governing any closure of the University because of a cyclone.

The cyclone season started officially on Saturday and runs until April, but staff and students should be alert to cyclones at any time of the year.

Staff and students should be aware of two websites in preparation for the season: the CDU Cyclone Emergency General Advice www.cdu.edu.au/fas/attachments/0501.1_Cyclone_Procedures.pdf, and the Bureau of Meteorology www.bom.gov.au/weather/cyclone.

This year the CDU homepage will carry a button where cyclone information as it impacts on the University will be lodged. This will be updated at 10am and 4pm daily in the event of a nearby cyclone.

Staff, students and external agencies should refer to this site which will announce any closure of the University.

In the event of a closure, staff and students should monitor 104.1 Territory FM for information on their return to work and classes.
