Melbourne Cup - Territory safari style

Students at Charles Darwin University made sure this year’s Melbourne Cup was a roaring success on November 6.

The Palmerston Campus-based students put on a ‘safari’ themed extravaganza for Melbourne Cup 2007 which was held at the Karawa restaurant.

The MC was Vikki Baldwin with special guests Robert McCleod, Mayor of Palmerston, and Morag McGrath, Head of School for Tourism and Hospitality.

Certificate II and III students in fashion studies presented a fashion show on the safari theme. From anaconda-inspired suits to green elves and frilled neck lizard outfits, all creatures of the forest were featured.

Hair and make-up for the fashion students was completed by students studying the Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy and Certificate II and III in Hairdressing.

The event was stage-managed by hospitality and events students, who were responsible for developing sponsor relationships, ticket sales, décor and audio visual.

VET in Schools and Certificate III Hospitality students provided the service for the day and all students were assessed in their respective categories during this Melbourne Cup event.

Best dressed male and female prizes, as well as a best hat prize were most popular with patrons, who were allocated tables themed on a safari animal.

Palmerston Campus students stage a Melbourne Cup event every year as part of their formal assessments, with varied themes and prizes.

This Palmerston Campus would like to thank this year’s sponsors: Darwin Harbour Cruises, Darwin Reef N Wrecks, Hardys Wines, Kakadu Dreams, Lion Nathan and Mindil Beach Markets.
