Simone a positive example for all Indigenous students

Charles Darwin University (CDU) student Simone Liddy’s stellar list of achievements for 2007 continues to grow after she was profiled on national television.

Simone’s achievements as a budding pharmacist were the focus of the SBS program ‘Living Black’ which aired last week.

She won the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award earlier this year for her long-time academic achievement, athletic prowess and mentoring of Indigenous students.

The third-year Bachelor of Pharmacy student and long-time Territorian said her grandparents were the driving force behind her impressive list of achievements.

"My grandparents were part of the stolen generation and they suffered a lot to give their children the opportunities that they didn't have,” she said.

"What I have achieved is because of them.

"There are a lot of negative images of Indigenous people in the media and it’s great that people feel that I am a positive example."

Simone was the first Indigenous Territorian to be awarded a pharmacy cadetship with the Department of Health and Community Services under the National Indigenous Cadetship Program.

The Territory hockey star and Northern Territory Institute of Sport scholarship holder has represented the Territory at a national level without fail since primary school and is now a valuable member of the Territory Pearls and captain of the Northern Territory under 21 women’s hockey team.
