Charles Darwin University's School of Science and Primary Industries has recently developed and launched a new and unique study/travel course, Discovering Tropical Birds.

This six day program combines study and travel to provide visitors to the Northern Territory and bird enthusiasts alike, the opportunity to experience and learn more about birds and other wildlife of the monsoon tropics.

Senior Lecturer-Biology and well known Ornithologist, Dr Richard Noske, said Discovering Tropical Birds was developed as a result of overwhelming interest.

“The Top End is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting almost half of the bird species found in Australia and many that occur only in the tropics,” he explained

“In consultation with Kate Shilling of Tourism NT, who is responsible for developing products and services for niche markets, as well as representatives from BusinessLink, the School of Science and Primary Industries and Corporate Communications (CDU), the course has been developed and gone from strength to strength.

“Where else can you observe first hand Magpie Geese and other waterbirds congregating in their thousands on shrinking billabongs as they wait for the first rains of the wet season to fall? Participants may also be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the Gouldian Finch, which is widely acclaimed as the most colorful bird in the world!”

During this six day program participants will learn about the Top End’s unique flora and fauna from Dr Noske who has over twenty years experience in the field, while experiencing some of the Territory’s most renowned locations.
