Electric nights hit Darwin in the dry

Darwin experiences many electric nights during the wet season, but this dry Darwin experienced a unique dry season electric night as part of the Seventh Darwin International Guitar Festival.

Electric Nights featured visiting Canadian composer and guitarist Tim Brady, in a concert that engaged audiences in a cutting edge presentation of electric guitar, staged outdoors at the CDU Soundshell.

The program included a number of eclectic pieces, featuring pre-recorded everyday noises (such as voices and traffic), random sound created by musical toys, bells, small instruments and whistles, all supported by a cycle of music for electronics, guitar and tape.

Prior to performing at the Seventh Darwin International Guitar Festival, Tim Brady had created music in a wide range of genres ranging from chamber and orchestral music to electro acoustic works, chamber opera, contemporary dance scores, jazz and free improvisation.

He has also enthralled audiences from London to New York, Amsterdam to Paris, with his own music as well as works which he has commissioned for other composers, with the vision of developing a new voice for the electric guitar.

CDU contemporary music lecturer and local Darwin musician Cal Williams said: “this was a rare chance for Darwin people to enjoy an innovative electric guitar player of such a high calibre; who has such varied styles and methodology incorporated into his performances.”
