The Darwin Town Hall ruins proved one of the more notable venues for the Seventh Darwin International Guitar Festival, providing a spectacularly unique backdrop for the concert An Evening of Poetry, Prose, Theatre and Light.

The two part concert began with a poetry and prose performance by the Sydney Guitar Trio, narrated by Rory O’Donoghue, of Aunty Jack fame and was followed by an evocative fusion of light and music by Karin Schaupp and lighting designer Mary-Anne Kyriakou.

The first performance, Once Upon a Time, included four works of poetry and prose, beginning with a composition by local Darwin Composer Cathy Applegate. Cathy’s works titled Town Hall Ruins were created specifically for the Guitar Festival concert, in acknowledgement of the special venue. Town Hall Ruins was narrated to the music Delta, composed by Venezuelan Elvis Suarez.

The second concert, Guitar and Light brought together lighting designer and composer Mary-Anne Kyriakou and renowned Australian guitarist Karin Schaupp. A special feature of the concert was the premiere of a new work by Mary-Anne Kyriakou “Guitar and Light” inspired by the changing scenes and moods of the composer’s daily Bondi Beach bus ride.

Focusing on sustainable lighting design and set against the Town Hall Ruins the show proved to be a spectacular exploration of the creative relationship between lighting design, technology and music .
