Alumina mining and manufacturing giant Alcan will launch its new student program at Charles Darwin University on March 30.
CDU is among 10 Australian universities selected for Plan A – a scheme that will see Alcan offering scholarships, a mentoring program, vacation work experience and even international trips to engineering students.
Alcan’s aim is to encourage engineering students to sign on with the company while still studying – and to gain the benefits of belonging to one of the world’s major mining enterprises.
Alistair Field, the Vice-President of Alcan’s Pacific operations, will launch Plan A at the School of Engineering on March 30 at noon.
He will explain Alcan’s scholarship and mentoring scheme to engineering undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Along with the benefits of scholarships, Alcan will invite selected students to spend time visiting its operations and get to know how the company functions.
There will also be the chance to travel to its operations overseas. Alcan is headquartered in Canada, but has plants operating around the world.
Mr Field will be accompanied by Alcan’s Goodwill Ambassador, Canadian Paralympic gold medalist Chantal Petitclerc, who won five gold medals at the Athens Paralympics in wheelchair events from sprints to 1500m.
Ms Petitclerc is an inspirational speaker and motivator who will talk about her own experiences in striving for excellence.
